When somebody discovers an ancient object, they often have no idea what it might be worth or what its significance used to be. While objects made of gold or other precious metals have a material value, their intangible value as treasure or “cultural heritage” is harder to determine and subject to change.
In the past, many finds were melted down and the metal reused. Not until the 19th century were they increasingly recognised as historical artefacts.
Finds of precious metals should always be reported to the relevant authorities.
